You may hear about it, but actually seeing in your own eyes, a living example of the broken Native American society; A society with over 11% unemployment rate and almost 1/3 are under the poverty line, a society where alcohol and drug abuse numbers are over the roof and has the highest suicide rate out of all ethnic groups. When you actually see it in your own eyes, it breaks your heart.
In my humble opinion, the thing that hurts these indigenous people the most, is not just the need to cope with the actual genocide they’ve experienced, where an estimate of 100 million native Americans were slaughtered since Christopher Columbus voyage to the New World in 1492.
The thing that’s killing these people today is the mental and spiritual genocide the capitalistic society we live in is imposing on the soul.
A society that glorifies the use of performance enhancement drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin with kids in middle school and high school, so they’ll be better students and get better jobs and get placed higher in the social ladder.
A society that idolize the superficial and shallow.
A society that forgot the importance of community and lost the values of the tribe, all in the name of the Self and the Individual.
“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.” ~ Herman Melville
